My Final Outline

Topic: Euthanasia

Thesis Statement: The result of practicing mercy killing among dying patients

I. What is euthanasia?
A. Came from the greek word eu- and thanatos

1. Eu – good/well and thanatos – death/end
B. intentional termination of life by another by explicit request of person who dies
C. euthanasia has many meanings due to moral/ethnical/religious terms-mass confusion
.

II. There are different types of Euthanasia
A. Passive euthanasia- it is the form of euthanasia which speeding up death of person by withdrawing some form of life support & letting nature take its course

1. Removing of life by the support of an equipment
2. Stopping medications, Stopping water & food supply
4. It is not delivering CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation)
5. Giving morphine to patient to control pain but causing a sooner death (given to people who are terminally ill or in a vegetative state)
B. Active euthanasia- it is the form of euthanasia which causing death through direct action with response to a request from that person, mercy killing
C. Physician assisted suicide- it is the form of euthanasia which the physician supplies info and/or means of committing suicide, death where doctors provide a prescription to fasten their death

1. Lethal dose of sleeping pills, carbon monoxide gas, Euthanasia protocol (lethal injection)
D. Involuntary euthanasia- it is the form of euthanasia which is killing person against their will- it was in form of murder.

E. Voluntary euthanasia –it is the form of euthanasia which the patients decide on her/his own, whether he/she refuses medicine, life support, takes their own life or overdoses.

F. Non Voluntary euthanasia –it is the form of euthanasia which the death of the patients was approved and it was performed by the relatives or close friends of the patient.



III. Euthanasia is justifiable to be done in order to stop sufferings among dying patients.
A. Immediate death is a good medical treatment because it stops the suffering of the patient

B. Because the quality of human life is more important than length of life
C. euthanasia may become an economic need due to the increase of new diseases, that occurs because of the non stop rise of population growth
D. termination of life in animals- “putting it out if its misery”- but when it comes to humans, we allow long suffering just so they can live and to see them longer.
E. People in vegetative state lead prolonged lives which are meaning less

IV. Euthanasia is not justifiable or not allowed to be done in order to stop sufferings among dying patients.

A. Euthanasia maybe used negatively by people

1. Euthanasia is just another term for murder

B. Because in religion
1. The death of humans should be in the hands of god not ourselves
2. Killing is not justified by any means, and we the humans don’t have any right to kill another human

C. If euthanasia is allowed, people may be under the impression that suicide is a right answer to solve a problem or to escape with it.
D. the risk of incorrect diagnosis may lead to undesired euthanasia

V. What is Euthanasia in the beliefs of some Religion?

A. Buddhism

1. Mostly of the Buddhist are against of the Euthanasia.

2. Based on Karma, Buddhists regard death as a transition. The deceased person will be reborn to a new life, whose quality will be the result of their karma.

3. This suggests that suicide (and so euthanasia) is only approved for people who have achieved enlightenment.

B. Christian

1. Mostly of the Christians are against of Euthanasia, their arguments are usually based on the beliefs that life is given by God.

2. The Roman Catholic Church does not accept that human beings have a right to die, human beings are free agents but their freedom does not extend to the ending of their life.

C. Hinduism

1. Hindus believe that euthanasia is not allowed because it may harm the teaching of ahimsa (doing harm)

2. Prayopavesa, or fasting to death, is an acceptable way for a Hindu to end their life in certain circumstances.

D. Islam

1. Muslims are against euthanasia. They believe that all human life is sacred because it is given by Allah, and that Allah chooses how long each person will live. Human beings should not interfere in this.

E. Sikhism

1. Sikhs have a high respect for life which they see as a gift from God. Most Sikhs are against euthanasia, as they believe that the timing of birth and death should be left in God's hands.
